About J-1 Visa

Before you shall departure to join in Work & Travel Program, you are required to submit a visa application to enter USA as so called J-1 Visa or Exchange Visitor Visa. The program is supported by American government for cultural exchange, friendship, and good understanding among several nationals, for instance, Exchange Student Program, Internship Program, Aupair Program and Work & Travel Program, etc.
J-1 Visa is a temporary visa and the visa holder is obliged to return his/her home country. The applicant for J-1 visa must be supported by the organization in USA who certifies or supports the cultural exchange program to issue DS-2019 and SEVIS in supporting visa application.
DS-2019 or Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status is issued to the student by organization in abroad, which contains, organizations name, programs name, estimated expenses, working place, period of working from the beginning to completion schedules. The student can work only during the period specified in DS-2019, that means the student can not start working before the commencement date nor continue working after the expiry date as specified in DS-2019. |

SEVIS is the abbreviation of Student and Exchange Visitor Information System
This is the system designed by the government to record information and follow up the exchange student in USA. SEVIS system shall link information with Department of Homeland Security and Department of Home Security of USA, all participants are required to comply with SEVIS rules which shall record travel history and residential of the participant during in USA. The participant of Work and Travel Program must pay 35.00 USD fee. In this regard, IEO Study Abroad shall be responsible to pay for SEVIS fee for all students.
J-1 visa in Work & Travel Program is valid for maximum 6 months.
The embassy shall grant 4 months visa (as specified in passport on J-1 visa page) whereby you can travel to USA 1 month before the date specified in your passport and tour for another 1 month after its expiry of visa, please be reminded that it must not exceed 1 month otherwise it is liable to an offense according to the law. |

- Coordinate to apply for DS-2019 and SEVIS FEE from organization in USA.
- Book interview queue with the embassy according to the date and time prescribed by the embassy.
- Examine all documents to ensure their correctness before submitting visa application with the embassy.
- Provide consultancy and suggestion to prepare all related documents.

2. Passport valid more than 6 months, it is recommended to submit all expired
or valid passports (whether or not with USA visa stamps) to support your application. |

The face must be larger than 50% of total area with clear view of two ears

4. 1 original latest transcript in English.
5. 1 original Certification of Student Status in English (valid not exceeding 60 days).
6. 1 original of Financial Status Certificate of the sponsor, issued by the bank which spells name and surname according to the passport of the participant.
7. Employment Certificate of sponsor.
- In case of government official, an English Employment Certificate which indicates position, working period and salary rate, issued by its Headquarter is acceptable.
- In case of working in private company or state enterprise, an English Employment Certificate which indicates position, working period and salary rate, issued by the company is acceptable.
- In case of self-employed, original or copy of Commercial Registration or Partnership/Company Registration Certificate with official signature and stamp is acceptable.
- In case of there is no commercial registration nor other certificate, it is required to issue an English letter explaining nature of business, duration of operation along with 3-4 pictures.

| 8. Financial evidence of the sponsor**
Financial evidence from more than 1 bank is available
- Original Bank Statement which spelling name and surname according to the passport of the traveler.
- For saving account, photocopy all pages of passbook of the sponsor duly certified by the bank for 6 retrospective months or latest update original passbook.
- For current account, original Bank Statement for 6 retrospective months as issued by the bank is acceptable.

9. Copy of House Registration of the student and guardian **** original and 1 copy
** Remark: The embassy shall return after interview.
10. Other additional documents such as, Certificate for change of name-surname, educational certificates, etc. |

In case of the sponsor is not parents (father/mother) the sponsor must issue a
Letter to certify relationship to the student in English |

Completion of Form
Completion of J-1 Visa Application Form, For DS 156 page 1 and 2, the participant must type your personal data in on-line form at http://evisaforms.state.gov/ and click to DS-156 : Nonimmigrant Visa Application (lowest line). The form is printable upon it is perfectly completed. |

Caution!!!
- The form is printable after all items are completed.
- Any correction after printing must be made only in web and then reprint.
Suggestion: The participant is able to complete personal data by pen in DS 157 and DS 158 provided that completion of all Forms must be only in English.
Remark: After preparation all documents for visa application, the participant must send all documents to the Program. |
